Guitar Practice Log 2024

A record of my guitar learning journey throughout 2024. I started as a complete beginner in January and tracked my progress monthly.

Guitar: Yamaha FG800 (acoustic)
Goal: Play 10 songs confidently by December
Practice Schedule: 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week

January: The Fundamentals

What I Learned

  • How to hold the guitar and pick correctly
  • Open chords: G, C, D, Em, Am
  • Simple strumming: down-down-down-down pattern
  • How to read chord diagrams and tablature

Songs Attempted

  • "Horse with No Name" (Am and Em only -- great first song)
  • "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (G, D, Am, C -- struggled with Am to C transition)

Challenges

  • Fingers hurt constantly. Calluses have not formed yet.
  • C chord is impossible -- cannot get all strings to ring cleanly
  • Changing between chords takes 3-4 seconds (way too slow for songs)

Practice Log

  • Total practice time: ~10 hours
  • Chord changes per minute (G to C): 8 (target: 30+)

February: Building Speed

What I Learned

  • New chords: E, A, D7
  • The "1-minute chord change" drill (count how many changes in 60 seconds)
  • Down-up strumming pattern
  • Palm muting basics

Songs Attempted

  • "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" -- can play it slowly now
  • "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (G, C, D)
  • "Stand by Me" (G, Em, C, D)

Progress

  • C chord rings clean about 70% of the time
  • Chord changes per minute (G to C): 18 (up from 8)
  • Calluses are forming -- less pain during practice

March: First Complete Song

What I Learned

  • Barre chord concept (F chord -- the wall every beginner hits)
  • Fingerpicking pattern: thumb on bass, fingers on treble strings
  • How to use a capo
  • Alternate down-up strumming with accents

Songs I Can Play (Start to Finish)

  1. "Horse with No Name" -- comfortable
  2. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" -- at tempo with singing

F Chord Struggle

Attempted F barre chord for 2 weeks straight. Cannot get it to sound clean. Switched to the "easy F" (just the top 4 strings) for now. Will revisit barre chords next month.

April: Fingerpicking and Barre Chords

What I Learned

  • Travis picking pattern (alternating bass with melody)
  • Barre chord shapes: F and Bm
  • Power chords for rock songs
  • Basic music theory: what makes a chord major vs minor

Songs Added

  1. "Dust in the Wind" (fingerpicking -- very challenging but rewarding)
  2. "Wish You Were Here" (intro riff + strumming)

Barre Chord Update

F chord is about 50% clean now. The trick was realizing I needed to roll my index finger slightly to use the bony side. Bm is harder because my hand has to stretch further.

Practice Log

  • Total practice time: ~12 hours this month
  • Can play 4 songs confidently

May: Rhythm and Timing

What I Learned

  • Using a metronome (should have started this in month 1)
  • Triplet strumming pattern
  • Hammer-ons and pull-offs
  • Muted strumming (percussive scratch)

Songs Added

  1. "Wonderwall" (finally -- the song every beginner wants to play)
  2. "Hey There Delilah" (fingerpicking)

Key Insight

Playing with a metronome revealed that my timing was terrible. I was rushing through difficult chord changes and slowing down on easy ones. Spent the entire month drilling songs at 70% speed with the metronome. It felt tedious but my playing sounds noticeably more musical now.

June: Intermediate Territory

What I Learned

  • Pentatonic scale (minor) in position 1
  • Basic improvisation over a 12-bar blues
  • Chord embellishments: sus2, sus4, add9
  • How to read guitar tabs on Ultimate Guitar

Songs Added

  1. "Blackbird" (the fingerpicking milestone -- took 3 weeks to learn)

Half-Year Review

At the 6-month mark, I recorded myself playing all 7 songs. Compared to January recordings, the improvement is dramatic. Notes ring cleaner, timing is more consistent, and chord changes are mostly smooth.

July-August: Summer Plateau

Honest Assessment

Progress slowed down significantly. I was comfortable with what I knew and less motivated to push into harder material. Practiced inconsistently -- maybe 3 times per week instead of 5.

What I Did to Break Through

  • Signed up for 4 online lessons (JustinGuitar intermediate course)
  • Started learning songs I actually love instead of "beginner-friendly" ones
  • Joined an online forum and posted recordings for feedback

Songs Added

  1. "Fast Car" (Tracy Chapman -- requires solid fingerpicking and chord knowledge)

September: Theory Pays Off

What I Learned

  • The CAGED system for understanding the fretboard
  • How to play the same chord in different positions
  • Major scale in two positions
  • How keys work and why certain chords go together

Impact

Understanding theory changed how I learn songs. Instead of memorizing chord-by-chord, I now see patterns: "Oh, this is a I-V-vi-IV progression in G." Learning new songs takes half the time because many songs use the same underlying structures.

October: Playing with Others

First Jam Session

Played with a friend who plays drums. Discovered that playing alone and playing with another person are completely different skills. My timing issues became very obvious. But it was the most fun I have had playing guitar.

Songs Added

  1. "Hotel California" (the intro fingerpicking pattern -- still working on the solo)

November: Recording and Sharing

What I Did

  • Set up a basic recording setup (phone + free GarageBand)
  • Recorded all 9 songs as a personal milestone album
  • Shared 3 recordings with friends and family

Feedback

People were genuinely impressed, which was motivating. A friend asked me to play at a small holiday gathering. Terrifying but exciting.

December: The Performance

The Holiday Gathering

Played 4 songs at a friend's holiday party for about 15 people. Hands were shaking for the first song but settled down after that. Made a few mistakes but nobody noticed (or they were kind enough not to mention it).

Song Added

  1. "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen version -- learned specifically for the gathering)

Year-End Stats

  • Songs I can play confidently: 10 (goal achieved)
  • Total practice hours: ~130 hours
  • Chords mastered: 15+ open chords, 4 barre chord shapes
  • Biggest improvement: Rhythm and timing (thanks to the metronome)
  • Weakest area: Lead guitar / soloing
  • 2025 goals: Learn basic soloing, play in a jam session monthly, learn 10 more songs
